How to Transfer Money Safely

    Agent Location Transfers

    • 1). Find a retail location for a wire service such as Western Union or MoneyGram. Check-cashing stores, supermarkets and convenience stores offer the service.

    • 2). Fill out the MoneyGram or Western Union form with all the details including the name and address of the person you are sending the money to as well as the amount of money you would like to send. Make sure the person you are sending the money to has a valid ID such as a driver's license or passport as they will need to show it in order to pick up the money.

    • 3). Bring the form to the cashier and pay the amount of money you would like to send plus the fee they charge to send money.

    • 4). Keep your receipt, which will contain the control number that will allow you to track the money you have sent. Your recipient should receive the money within a few minutes.

    Bank Wire Transfer

    • 1). Tell the teller at your bank that you would like to do a wire transfer to another bank account and how much money you would like to transfer.

    • 2). Provide the teller with the bank account number as well as the SWIFT code where the transfer will be going. Each bank has a unique SWIFT code; get it from your recipient before initiating the transfer.

    • 3). Pay the teller the amount of money you want to wire plus the charge for sending a wire. In 2010, banks were typically charging $25 for a domestic wire and $49 for an international wire.

    • 4). Check after 24 to 48 hours to confirm that your recipient received the money you sent.

    Online Money Transfer

    • 1). Sign up for an account at an online service such as PayPal or Xoom.

    • 2). Log into your account in PayPal, for example, and select the "Send Money" tab. Enter the e-mail address or mobile phone number of your recipient, and the amount you're sending. Choose the type of currency from the drop-down menu.

    • 3). Click the "Personal" tab and choose the reason you're sending the money from the list provided. Hit "Continue."

    • 4). Verify the amount you are sending and hit the "Send Money" button. For transactions within the United States, you will not be charged a fee. International transfers will include a charge, which will vary depending on the destination. Your recipient will receive an e-mail telling them they have been sent money from you.
