How to Pay for Tuition Abroad
- 1). Speak to your your school adviser and financial aid officer regarding your school's policies and academic requirements for studying abroad. In many instances, financial aid will cover your studies abroad if the international program is affiliated with or approved by your school. If it is an unknown program, chances are you may not get financial assistance or you may have to look to outside funding sources.
- 2). Figure out the cost of attendance by itemizing tuition, lodging, transportation, meals, books, and miscellaneous expenses. A relevant issue is whether financial aid will cover the total cost of attendance. You will have to find alternative sources of funding, if financial aid only covers tuition.
- 3). Research scholarship and grant programs that can supplement your financial aid. Your school may offer a scholarship to study abroad; however, don't count on it. Look into U.S. government grants, scholarships and loan programs to students who want to study abroad. Foreign countries also offer scholarship opportunities to students who want to study at their universities. For example, the British government offers scholarships to foreign students who want to study in the United Kingdom. You can also look into nonprofit organizations such as the Rotary Club, through its Ambassadorial Scholarships, and IES Abroad, which promotes international education.
