How Do I Add Horsepower to My Mitsubishi 3000 GT?

    • 1). Install a performance exhaust. The stock exhaust on the 3000 GT is relatively restrictive in order to keep the exhaust quieter. But anyone who wants more power from their 3000 GT will probably not mind a louder exhaust system. A larger diameter exhaust and free-flow muffler will allow the engine to run more efficiently and create more power, since exhaust gases leave the engine that much faster.

    • 2). Replace the stock headers with long tube headers. There are performance long tube headers available for the 3000 GT that will unleash more power by getting exhaust gases out of the engine more quickly. The stock manifolds have rough castings and small internal passages that restrict airflow, whereas tube headers feature smoother internals and larger diameter passages for better flow and more power.

    • 3). Upgrade to high-flow catalytic converters. Stock 3000 GT cats are restrictive. You can upgrade the cats to performance ones while still complying with emission standards. You should check to make sure that performance catalytic converters are legal in your area.

    • 4). Install a performance air intake. A CAI (cold air intake) will help the engine create more power by delivering additional dense cold air to the intake. The CAI consists of a large cone filter that leads into large diameter tubing rather than a restrictive air box, which is what the stock engine uses. CAIs are relatively easy to install. They involve removing the stock air box from the engine and installing the CAI in its place.

    • 5). Install smaller, lighter pulleys for the belt driven components in the engine. Due to the large size of the stock pulleys, they create parasitic drag on the engine and reduce its potential power output. Smaller performance pulleys free up horsepower due to their smaller size and diameter. These are easy to install, particularly if you are installing a new belt as part of routine maintenance.
