- 1). Render tallow by placing the fat in a pot or on a baking sheet or pan and cooking it in the oven at a low temperature (200 degrees Fahrenhiet) for several hours. This will slowly render the fat away from any meat present, melting it down into a liquid.
- 2). Test to see if the tallow is completely melted, then strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove the cracklings.
- 3). Check the color of the tallow. It should be a creamy yellowish color.
- 4). Check the odor. This should be mild and have a very slight meaty smell without being strong.
- 5). Check the consistency of the tallow to be sure it's ready. It should be solid at room temperature, but still soft enough to spread.
