Fabric Pumpkin Placemats

    • 1). Trace a 14-inch circle on the back of wrapping paper using a compass, or trace around a dinner plate, 2 inches larger than the plate's circumference. Cut out the circle. This is your pumpkin pattern.

    • 2). Trace a 4 1/2-inch-tall triangle with a 3-inch base on the back of the wrapping paper. Cut out the triangle. Measure 1 1/2 inches down from the top point and cut across the triangle, removing the point. The remainder of the triangle is the pumpkin stem pattern.

    • 3). Fold 1 yard of orange fabric into two layers with the right sides together. Pin the pumpkin pattern to the fabric and cut out. Repeat three more times for a set of four placemats. Using the pumpkin pattern, cut out four pumpkin shapes from lightweight quilt batting.

    • 4). Remove the pattern. Place two fabric pumpkin shapes together with the right sides facing. Lay one batting pumpkin on top. Pin around the edges through all layers. Sew the pinned edges, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Leave a 3-inch opening for turning. Repeat with the remaining cut pieces for a total of four placemats.

    • 5). Turn the placemats right side out and press. Sew around the edge of each placemat as close to the edge as possible. This will close the placemats and and create a finished edge.

    • 6). Fold a placemat in half. Place a pin in the placemat on each end of the fold. Unfold the placemat. The pins mark the center-top and center-bottom of the pumpkin. Using a disappearing ink pin, draw four curving pumpkin spines (equally spaced) from the center-top to the center-bottom of the pumpkin. Sew along each drawn line. Repeat on the remaining placemats.

    • 7). Fold the green fabric into two layers with the right sides together. Pin the pumpkin stem pattern to the fabric and cut out. Repeat three more times for each placemat. Using the stem pattern, cut out four stem shapes from lightweight quilt batting.

    • 8). Remove the pattern. Place two fabric stem shapes together with the right sides facing. Lay one batting stem on top. Pin around the edges through all layers. Sew the pinned edges using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Leave a 2-inch opening in the center of one edge for turning. Repeat with the remaining cut pieces for a total of four stems.

    • 9). Clip off the corners of the stem's seams to remove bulk. Turn the stems right side out and press.

Lay one pumpkin placemat on your work surface. Place one stem on the top of the pumpkin, overlapping the bottom of the stem 1 inch over the top edge of the pumpkin. Pin the stem to the pumpkin. Sew around all edges of the stem as close to the edge as possible. This will close the stem's opening, attach the stem to the pumpkin and create a finished edge to the stem. Repeat with the remaining stems and pumpkin placemats.
