How to Upgrade the Performance of a 2001 Chevy Tahoe

    • 1). Upgrade the wheels and tires. If you want better handling from your Tahoe, fit your truck with a set of larger aftermarket wheels and better performing tires. You can also tailor the tire choice to the truck's primary use, for example, if you use your truck off road, you can install tires specific for that use.

    • 2). Fit your Tahoe with larger sway bars. Sway bars are bolted to either side of the suspension at the front and rear and act as a lever arm when the Tahoe is driven around a corner. Installing larger sway bars further reduces body roll and improves grip and stability.

    • 3). Install a cold air intake in place of the stock air box. The Tahoe's stock air box, while effective, restricts power. A cold air intake and performance filter delivers more cold air to the engine resulting in a boost of horsepower.

    • 4). Upgrade the exhaust system. The Tahoe's stock exhaust is restrictive. Replacing it with a larger diameter exhaust and a performance muffler will help the engine breath better and make more power. You may also realize slightly better gas mileage. Installation requires special cutting and welding equipment, thus this upgrade is best performed by an exhaust specialist.

    • 5). Reflash the engine's electronics. There are some handy devices available that allow the owner to reprogram the engine's computer for more power and torque without even having to take it to a technician. Just plug in the device according to the directions and select the program you want to use.
