How to Prepare Your Home For Your Ferret

Ferrets are naturally inquisitive and in your home this means that they can get themselves into all sorts of trouble.
There are things that you can do to reduce the chances of this happening though.
So how do you prepare your home for your ferret? When you are ferret proofing your home it's a good idea to put your ferret onto his leash and let him investigate his new area.
While you are giving him his guided tour watch to see if there are any areas that he is particularly interested in.
It may be that there is a hole or a gap that he has seen and will want to investigate further.
Make a note of any areas he selects and once he is back in his cage check it thoroughly and block up any holes or gaps you find.
You should also block of any gaps you have under furniture.
Ferrets have been known to crawl under or behind chairs, fridges and beds and get themselves trapped.
In some instances they have crawled inside furniture and when it is sat on or used the ferret has met with an unfortunate accident.
Keep any cleaning products very well secured and out of reach.
Ferrets seem to be attracted to the chemical smells in bleach and other products and you don't want yours to drink something he shouldn't.
Remove any houseplants out of his way.
Many of these are toxic to ferrets so try to put them high up in a room where he can't get to them.
Also try to avoid long trailing plants like Ivy or Tradescantia.
If you have these then keep them trimmed back so that he can't use them to climb up or eat.
Keep all electrical cables hidden and secure.
Ferrets will chew pretty much anything and the last thing you will want to do is accidentally electrocute him.
Make sure that any windows and doors are securely closed and locked when your ferret is outside his cage.
Ferrets are very good climbers and escapologists so even if your window is only opened a tiny crack he may be able to open it enough for his head to get through and once this happens, the rest of his body will follow and you may lose your ferret.
You should make sure that he is micro-chipped just in case this happens.
That way, if he turns up at a veterinary practice or a shelter they will be able to reunite you and your furry friend.
If any of this is not possible then consider getting him a playpen.
Make sure that the sides are high enough that he can't get out but that you can get to him easily.
You should also get him a collar with a bell attached so that if he does get himself into trouble you will be able to find him easily.
