HVAC License Regulations in Tennessee
- A contractor needs an HVAC person with a license if the construction project is more than $25,000. If the HVAC technician needs to obtain a license, he has to complete a business, law and trade course, as well as workers compensation paperwork and liability insurance covering the desired amount of the contractor.
- Submit the application for the license through the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors and pay the necessary $250 licensing fee, as of 2010. The exam itself is an additional $38, and a minimum score of 73 percent is required to pass.
- The license test has questions that are common knowledge to most contractors working with HVAC. In addition, study courses can be provided as a refresher course related to refrigeration, heating and cooling components and equipment, fuel and LP gas, combustion air, chimneys, flues, vents, ducts, safety, fire, and smoke protection.
