How to Write a Diary Account From a Short Story
- 1). Take notes on the short story you want to turn into a diary account. These notes should focus on the point of view you will take in your diary account and how much of the story you will be able to include. Suggest story additions and deletions that will be necessary as you construct the diary entries.
- 2). Write from a single character perspective. The goal is to tell the same story as the original short story, but from a single point of view. Keep in mind as you write, there are events and dialogue in the original story your diary character may not be privy to. Avoid making diary entries on elements of the story your POV character isn't present for.
- 3). Maintain voice. It's important that the journal entries are consistent with each other and with the character whose POV you're using to construct the diary entries.
- 4). Write diary entries that tell certain portions of your short story from a different perspective than that found in the story or that highlights a back story that correlates with the original short story.
- 5). Pace your diary entries carefully. Since you're writing diary entries for a short story, it is easy to lose sight of the story within the diary format. Diaries tend to focus on limited subject matter and are written sporadically. It's important you keep pace with the short story while making the diary realistic.
