- 1). Press drywall tape along each seam between the installed Sheetrock boards. Spread joint compound over it with a 6-inch drywall knife, making the line of compound just wide enough to cover the tape (about 3 inches). Make the compound flat and smooth. Spread a little compound over each screw hole in the Sheetrock as well.
- 2). Let the compound set six hours or more. Scrape off any ridges or high points with your 6-inch knife.
- 3). Spread a second coat of compound over the first, making the seam about 5 inches wide and flat.
- 4). Let the second coat set for six hours. Scrape off the ridges.
- 5). Spread a third coat of compound with your 10-inch knife, making the seam 7 to 8 inches wide. Keep it flat and smooth.
- 6). Let the third coat set for 12 hours. Sand it smooth with a drywall sander. Brush off the dust with a broom. The wall is now ready for painting.
