Is It Sleep Apnea Or Just Snoring?
I snore loudly and always have.
It's never been a problem for me, just for those around me.
I have always snored especially loudly when tired or after drinking.
When my wife started insisting I have a sleep study because I snore, I not surprisingly resisted.
I eventually went and was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea.
I was given a CPAP machine, a Continuous Positive Air Pressure Machine, which pumps air into a mask over my face in order to keep sagging tissues aside so you can breathe freely.
It takes some time to get used to it, but I now get a great night sleep every night! So how do you know if you have sleep apnea? Although it takes a medical professional to diagnose, here are a few warning signs.
Snoring is only one warning sign, others include: Being tired even after a good nights sleep Feeling sleepy all day, sometimes even to the point of falling asleep at your desk or home Crankiness or short temperedness Problems with memory or concentration Gasping or snorting in your sleep Waking up to urinate frequently at night If you have mild sleep apnea, you may be able to take care of it simply by sleeping on your side, losing weight, avoiding alcohol, and unblocking your nose before sleeping if possible.
Even with severe sleep apnea, these steps can help.
For example I've lost 20+ pounds and my apnea is not as severe as before.
If you suspect sleep apnea, please consult with a doctor.
There are severe medical effects, not just annoying snoring.
