How to Do the Riddle in Ruins of the Alph in "Pokemon: HeartGold & SoulSilver"
- 1). Head north of the research center in the heart of the Ruins of Alph and enter the cave.
- 2). Click on the pedestal in the cave to examine it. This begins the first puzzle. The puzzle consists of a broken picture of Kabuto you need to fix by moving the broken off pieces to their correct position on the picture. Once completed, you will fall through the floor to the next level.
- 3). Catch letter Unowns “A” to “J” in the area you fall into after completing the first puzzle. When catching the Unown, lower their health bar to the red as you do with any other Pokemon you capture. Throw a Poke Ball at each one to officially capture them. When done, follow the path to the exit.
- 4). Head back to the first cave. Find the panel at the back of the first cave and examine it. Take the Escape Rope out of your inventory and use it to open the hidden room.
- 5). Head to the second cave, which is south of the research center. Use a Pokemon with the Surf ability to make it over the lake blocking the entrance.
- 6). Click on the pedestal to begin the puzzle. A picture of an Aerodactyl will appear in the center of the screen. Rearrange the pieces of the picture to complete the puzzle. Make sure all the head pieces are on the top left part of the picture and all the tail pieces are on the bottom left.
- 7). Take Unowns “R” to “V” in the room you fall into. Return to the second cave and examine the back panel in the cave. Use a Pokemon with the Flash skill to open the hidden room.
- 8). Head to Union Cave, which is off of Route 32. You need to go through Union Cave to get access to the other two puzzle caves.
- 9). Head northwest from the entrance to the cave and go up the ladder. Continue northwest until you get to a fork in the road. The path that heads up goes to the third puzzle cave while the one heading down goes to the fourth cave.

Examine the pedestal to view the third puzzle; a picture of the Pokemon, Ho-Oh. Move the pieces around so that its head is in the center, the wings are on either side and the feet are directly below its head. - 11
Take Unowns “W” to “Z” in the room you drop into. Replace the first Pokemon in your team with Ho-Oh. Click on the back panel of the room to examine it and open the hidden room. - 12
Return to the fork in the path and follow the path leading down. Use the Strength skill to move the boulder in front of the entrance to the fourth cave. - 13
Look at the pedestal in the cave to bring forth the final puzzle; a picture of Omanyte. When putting the puzzle together, place the pieces of the shell to the right and the tentacle pieces at the bottom. - 14
Capture the Unown “K” to “Q” after you drop into the next room. Examine the panel in the back of the cave. Take out the Water Stone from your inventory and use it to open the last hidden room. - 15
Head back to the research center and speak to one of the scientists to register that you captured all the Unowns. They will then give you pages of the Unown Report. - 16
Head west after exiting the research center and enter the cave. Look at the back panel. You’ll immediately be sent back to the research center. Head back to the cave and reenter to complete the Ruins of Alph. This time, you’ll be able to take the “!” and “?” Onown from the cave.
