How to Convert a Pickup to a Dump Truck

Removing the Pickup Truck Bed

1). Disconnect all the electrical connections to the truck bed. These include brake lights, bed light and any accessories.
2). Remove all the bolts connecting the truck bed to the frame.
3). Lift and remove the truck bed.

1). Weld the two parallel skids the length of the truck frame.
2). Install the hydraulic ram centered between the skids. Weld to the frame cross member. Insure an adequate clearance for the ram to lift and recline between the skids.
3). Examine the electrical schematic to find available circuit for ram power source. Run the electrical power circuit into the cab, attach to an available circuit. Install the ram activator switch either in the cab or on the frame near the hydraulic ram.
4). Position the large heavy-gauge hinge perpendicular to the frame near rear of truck. Remember, the hinge will support the entire weight of the lifted truck bed plus contents. Ensure welds are more than adequate for the anticipated load.
5). Weld to the bottom of the removed truck bed the guide slide rails for hydraulic ram installation. Insure strong welds. The slide guide will support the weight of the lifted truck bed and contents.

1). Replace the truck bed onto the skids over the hydraulic ram and hinge.
2). Lift and support the truck bed from the frame. Adequately brace the truck bed so as to provide access to the hinge.
3). Weld the hinge to the bottom of the truck bed. Ensure strong welds. The hinge will support the entire weight of the truck bed and contents.

1). Attach the hydraulic ram to the slide rails.
2). Test the hydraulic ram assembly. Insure adequate clearance for all components.
3). Check the hinge and all other weld points for signs of any stress. Consider additional welds if necessary.
4). Test the pickup truck dump assembly with the anticipated full load weight. Inspect all the welds and hydraulic ram assemble. Fortify any suspected weak points in the assembly.
