Introduced by Ford in 2000, the F-650 is a commercial sized, Class 6/7, heavy-duty truck, meaning that its gross vehicle weight rating, or the maximum total mass allowable for the vehicle, is 19,501 to 33,000 lb. It is comparable to the GMC Topkick C5500 or the International Durastar. It is primarily used for hauling heavy loads and towing during construction projects, but it has become popular to outfit these trucks for personal use. - As of 2009, the Ford F650 had three cab configurations: Regular, Super, and Crew. It also had two engine options: the Cummins or the Caterpillar. It came in two trim levels, or feature packages: the XL and the XLT. The primary upgrades that came with the XLT were cloth seat-trim, a CD player, a center armrest with cup-holder, and molded door-trim panels with a map pocket.
- The standard features of the 2009 F650 included air-conditioning, a 45-gallon fuel tank, Quadraulic four-channel anti-lock brakes, a chrome grille, a chrome-steel bumper, dual rectangular mirrors, two Motorcraft 12-volt, 625 CCA batteries, a 12-volt 130-amp alternator, Stemco wheel seals, and roof clearance lamps.
Optional features included alternative bumper options, larger fuel tanks, alternators with more amps, air-system brakes, automatic traction control, an engine block heater, an engine exhaust brake, a floor console, a power takeoff provision, rear air suspension, choices of seat combinations, and choices of spare wheels. - The Cummins engine offered 200 to 325 horsepower with 520 to 750 ft-lb of torque. The Caterpillar offered 210 to 300 hp and 520 to 860 ft-lb of torque.
The standard transmission was an Allison 2500 five-speed automatic, but you could opt for a six-speed automatic or a five, six, or seven-speed manual. - The gross vehicle weight rating for the Pro Loader was 22,000 to 26,000 lb and 22,000 to 29,000 lb for the basic F-650.
The wheel-base of the F-650 ranged from 134 inches to 260 inches for the Regular Cab, 155 to 281 for the Super Cab, and 170 to 278 for the Crew Cab.
