Requirements for a U.S. Passport
- First-time applicants must apply in person and demonstrate proof of citizenship. Primary forms of evidence include a birth certificate certified by a city, county, or state, a Certificate of Citizenship or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad.
- Applicants under the age of 16 must apply with both parents, with few exceptions allowed. Minors must provide their Social Security card, along with proof of citizenship.
- Current passport fees are $100 for a passport book or $45 for a passport card for applicants who are more than 16 years old. Fees are $85 for a passport book or $35 for a passport card for applicants under 16 years old. Passport cards allow U.S. citizens to travel by land or sea only to limited areas, including Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean region. Thus, you need a passport book when flying to Mexico, but you may use a passport card when driving.
- To find a location where you can submit an application, check your local post office or go online to use the U.S. Dept. of State's facility locator. Processing times vary. Regular processing may take 4 to 6 weeks but expedited service that takes about 2 to 3 weeks is available at an increased rate.
- Make copies of your U.S. passport and take a few on any trip overseas, though keep them strategically hidden. If you lose your passport while abroad, contact the closest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
