How to Apply for Child Support in San Diego, California
- 1). Gather necessary information about the non-custodial parent. To assist with enforcing the child support order, you will need to provide as much information as possible about the other parent. Helpful information includes the full legal name, date of birth, current address, employer and Social Security number.
- 2). Obtain an application online. The County of San Diego website allows you to access the online application from the California Department of Child Support Enforcement. You will be asked to enter your email address and full name to create an account. A temporary password is sent to the email address provided. Once submitted, the completed application is electronically sent to the San Diego Child Support Enforcement Agency to speed up processing.
- 3). Pick up an application from the San Diego office if you are unable to obtain one online. Application packets are available at the local Department of Child Support Services. You will need to return the application to the same office.
- 4). Complete the application entirely. If a question does not apply, mark "NA." Do not leave any questions blank. If you do not have the necessary information, write "unknown." You will be asked to provide facts about the non-custodial parent, yourself and the children. You may be asked to produce copies of the marriage certificate, birth certificate or a declaration of paternity signed by both parents. The application also requires a physical description of the non-custodial parent. Note any distinguishing features or marks, including scars or tattoos.
- 5). Answer any questions the caseworker has about your case. If you are contacted by the caseworker seeking additional information, respond promptly.
- 6). Wait for a court date. Parents are notified of their assigned court date by phone or through the mail. Some child support cases can be settled without a hearing. If you would like to settle your case outside of court, both parties must contact the Department of Child Support Services prior to their scheduled court date.
