How to Get an Inside Handle Off of a Storm Door

    Removing the handle

    • 1). Check to see what type of screws you are dealing with. Most will be Phillips heads, which look like an x, but older doors may have standard, or flathead screws. There are typically two retaining screws on the top and bottom of the inside handle of the storm door.

    • 2). Choose an appropriate screwdriver. These range in size and are labeled with numbers. Your best bet is a No. 2 with a medium-length handle. Prop the door open by sliding the hold-open washer up against the back of the pneumatic cylinder.

    • 3). Hold the handle firmly in one hand to avoid dropping parts. Remove the screws. Handle pieces should easily lift away once screws are out. If the handle sticks, gently pry it away from the door with a standard screw driver. If it requires more than a little pressure, check to be sure all screws have been removed. If outdoor handle needs to be removed as well, remove the remaining screw that is typically located at the bottom of the handle.

    • 4). Be careful with the outside handle as some have removable springs that will pop loose and become lost if dropped. Use a piece of masking tape to wrap screws together and tape them inside the bag. Place the handle in the bag for storage and put it somewhere easy to remember. If you are working on more than one storm door at a time, label the bags with the location of the door to avoid confusion.

    • 5). Push the door out and release the hold-open washer to allow door to close before walking away to avoid wind damage to door hinges. Reinstall by reversing the order of the steps. If replacing with new hardware, choose matching hardware for easy installation.
