The GE Monogram Makes Noise When the Fan Comes on

    Turbo Cool

    • One of the features of the GE Monogram refrigerator is the "Turbo Cool" setting, which activates when a large amount of food or very warm food goes into the refrigerator. This helps to quickly reduce the refrigerator temperature back to the desired level, as warm food or large amounts of food can raise the interior temperature several degrees. When the Turbo Cool setting is on, the refrigerator compressor turns on and the fan will cycle on and off at a high speed. The fan may be audible during this time. The Turbo Cool setting will turn off automatically after 8 hours.

    Custom Cool

    • Another feature on the refrigerator is "Custom Cool," which can be turned on to quickly cool, thaw or maintain temperatures for specific items on a special tray in the refrigerator. The Custom Cool feature combines a temperature thermistor, damper, heater and a fan. When the Custom Cool feature activates, the fan may be audible as it turns on and off. This is normal and not a cause for concern.

    Other Fan Noises

    • The refrigerator fan operates at high speeds at different times during refrigerator operation, including during the first installation, if you open the doors frequently or if you place a large amount of food inside the refrigerator or freezer. The fan is operating loudly to help maintain the set temperatures, cool the light bulbs, reduce energy use or during the custom settings.

    Compressor Fan

    • If the refrigerator compressor fan gets very dirty, the refrigerator will have to run more often and work harder to maintain internal temperatures. This may also cause the fan to make more noise when running. You can clean the fan by disconnecting the power to the refrigerator and removing the back panel on the rear of the appliance. You should use a soft brush to clean the fan and remove dirt and lint from the blade.
