Reduce Your Footprints - Carbon Dioxide Climate Change

The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere trap energy from the sun. In other words, the greenhouse effect is the warming that happens when certain gases in the earth's atmosphere trap heat. This greenhouse effect is what keeps the earth's climate liveable. Without it, the Earth's surface would be an average of about 60 degrees Fahrenheit cooler. Way back then, global average temperatures have stayed fairly constant. Now, however, humans are enhancing the greenhouse effect though the burning of fossil fuels and other GHG emissions, giving rise to what we know as carbon dioxide climate change.

Scientists often use the term climate change instead of global warming. This is because as the Earth's average temperature climbs, winds and ocean currents move heat around the globe in ways that can cool some areas, warm others, and change the amount of rain and snow falling. As a result, the climate changes differently in different areas.

The impacts of climate change are numerous. It affects different areas including agriculture, forestry, and ecosystems; water resources; industry, settlements, and society; and human health. The temperature change, for example, has resulted to an increase in yields in colder environments and a decrease in yields in warmer environments.

Drought has increased the risk of malnutrition, as well as of water- and food-borne diseases. The rise in sea level has reduced the availability of freshwater due to salt-water intrusion. Cyclones and storm surges have damaged crops, uprooted trees, and damaged coral reefs. Other heavy precipitation events have disrupted settlements, commerce, transport, and societies due to flooding. They have also put pressure on urban and rural infrastructures, and have resulted to loss of property.

Indeed, carbon dioxide climate change has caused a set of changes to the earth's climate or long-term weather patterns that varies from place to place. The rapid rise in greenhouse gases is changing the climate faster than some living things may be able to adapt.
