The Best Way to Preserve Morel Mushrooms

    • 1). Clean morel mushrooms. Use only a small amount of water, because water causes them to lose their flavor. Cut them in half lengthwise, and brush the sand out of them. Be careful not to brush or scrub them too hard; this damages the morels.

    • 2). Cut the thread into 18-inch pieces.

    • 3). Thread the mushrooms through their stems.

    • 4). Hang the mushrooms in a sunroom or high in any room or attic. To dry morels, it is necessary to remove all the water from them, so make sure they are completely dry before they are removed. If they are hung from the rafters or in the sunroom, it will take approximately four days.

    • 5). Take the morels down and remove the string.

    • 6). Store the morels in an air-tight plastic bag or jar.
