How to Hit Solid Iron Shots

    • 1). Begin the backswing by making a smooth take away and work the club back and up into position.

    • 2). Once at the top of the swing, the key to the rest of the swing is to make a smooth transition into the downswing. Begin the downswing by moving your upper body weight to the left (opposite for left-handed players).

    • 3). During the transition, feel as if your rear end is squatting into a chair while your upper body is moving laterally to the left. To help achieve those positions, push into the ground with your legs while the left hip pushes toward the target.

At this stage in the swing, avoid turning the hips.

    • 4). While the hips push laterally to the left, drop the hands and club straight down. The shoulders should NOT turn or open. Once the hands drop into the slot, resist the temptation to unhinge the wrist. By maintaining wrist hinge you will create lag and store power for the impact.

    • 5). From the slot position, after the hands have dropped into the pre-impact position and the upper body and hips have shifted to the left and moved laterally to the left, swing through the ball and allow the club to release and the body to then turn through the shot.
