How to Start a Yeast Culture for Wine Making

    • 1). Break the contents within the smack pack to activate the yeast. Keep it at room temperature for a couple of days in order to let the yeast ferment.

    • 2). Bring the water to a boil on the stove. Add the dry malt extract, and boil for 10 minutes. Cool the pot by placing it in a sink filled a quarter with ice and place the thermometer in the mixture.

    • 3). Pour the mixture into the glass jar when the thermometer reads 80 degrees F, and add the packaged yeast as well. Close the lid tightly and shake to mix it. Unscrew the top so that it is loosely attached to the jar. Leave for a couple of days, then repeat the process using 1/4 of the yeast mixture.
