Old Stealth Games

    Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

    • When it released in 2003, "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell" invited players to infiltrate terrorist organizations, steal military intelligence and silently execute corrupt dignitaries. Featuring a campaign over 20 hours long and a dynamic lighting system that emphasized shadows, "Splinter Cell" was a technically advanced game but supported itself with a rich fiction. Penned by famous writer Tom Clancy, the game detailed the exploits of secret agent Sam Fisher as he carried out missions for the NSA.

    Thief: The Dark Project

    • "Thief: The Dark Project" was created by developer Looking Glass Studios, which also created "System Shock." The game received commendation for its use of stealth gameplay, providing players with an opportunity to role-play as a medieval thief. Players were required to keep track of their visibility and audibility as they sneaked through castles and towns. The original was released in 1998 and many sequels followed. This was the first 3D stealth game for the PC.

    Metal Gear

    • Unlike the 3D follow-ups in the "Metal Gear Solid" series, the original "Metal Gear" title was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America and Japan in 1987. Developed and published by Konami, "Metal Gear" was one of the earliest games to feature enemies that could detect if a player was hiding and base their actions on that knowledge. Although its 3D counterparts are now far more popular than the 8-bit original, "Metal Gear" for the Nintendo Entertainment System started them all.

    Hitman

    • In "Hitman" players take on the role of an assassin known only as Agent 47. They are tasked with carrying out a series of murders for a variety of clients, often using the environments around their subjects to make the deaths seem accidental. Players are also instructed to ensure they are not seen and no evidence is left at the crime scene. Released in 2000, "Hitman" has spawned many sequels and a feature film produced by Vin Diesel.
