History of coffee -
It is believed that the history of coffee goes at least far back in the thirteenth century. The coffee was first grown in the Highlands of Ethiopia, where the legend of Kaldi, the goatherd originated. Kaldi discovered coffee when he noticed that the goats became spirited after eating berries from a certain trees that they did not want to sleep at night.

Kaldi soon informed this to the abbot of the local monastery and soon the abbot shared this discovery with other monks of the monastery. Ever since the energizing effects of the berries began to spread across the Arabian Peninsula.

The Arabians were not only the first one who started cultivating the coffee, but even the one who began to trade with it. By the 15th century, coffee started to be grown in one of the districts of Arabia, called Yemini. Then by the 16th century, it started to be grown in Egypt, Persia, Turkey and Syria.

With increasing demand of coffee, coffee houses became the major centers of social activity and communication.

Then in the year 1720, coffee made its appearance in America. It was introduced when a French infantry captain Gabriel de Clieu brought one plant with him and planted on the Caribbean Island of Martinique. Gradually the sprouts started flouring through the place and became the parent of over nineteen million coffee trees on the island. Within 50 years coffee plantation spread to Haiti, Mexico and other islands of the Caribbean. The territory of San Domingo started its coffee plantation from the year 1734, and by 1788 it started supplying half the world's coffee. Then the Continental Congress of the colonized United States declared coffee the national drink.
