How to Clean a Stove Pipe From a Wood Stove
- 1). Purchase a stovepipe cleaning kit from your local hardware store or from a reputable online dealer. It will include a wire brush or chimney whip designed to scrape off soot and ash as well as a stove brush to help you clean out the stove's interior. Before purchasing the kit, measure the circumference of the stovepipe to make sure that you get the correct size brush.
- 2). Disassemble the stovepipe and the connector pipe from the stove according to the manufacturer's instructions. This will vary from model to model but usually consists of turning the stovepipe in a counterclockwise direction and lifting it off of the roof.
- 3). Find a place outside to clean out the pipe. This should be a well-ventilated and well-lit place. The soot and ash may be disbursed into the air while cleaning the pipe, so it is a good idea to wear a face mask, especially if you suffer from asthma or other types of respiratory diseases.
- 4). Pull the wire brush or whip through the pipe to remove the build up of residue. Repeat this brushing motion until the residue has been removed. This may take some time if the pipe hasn't been cleaned for some time. Repeat this step with the connector pipe.
- 5). Reassemble the connector pipe and stovepipe and attach to the body of the stove, according to manufacturer's instructions.
