How to Change the Transmission Fluid in a 2005 Santa Fe

    • 1). Drive the Hyundai for a few minutes to warm up the transmission fluid and allow any particles and sediments that may have settled to be suspended in the fluid. Position wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Lift the Santa Fe using a floor jack, and place jack stands under the front sub-frame.

    • 2). Place a drain pan under the transmission drain plug located on the bottom of the transmission near the driver's side wheel well. Unscrew the large drain plug with a socket from the socket set and allow it to drain into the pan.

    • 3). Wipe off any particles that have been caught by the magnet on the end of the drain plug. Dispose of the used transmission fluid in the same way you would dispose of used motor oil. Most auto parts stores and auto repair shop accept used oil and transmission fluid for recycling. Check the drain plug and gasket for damaged threads and replace them when needed to prevent leaks. Screw the drain plug back into the transmission with the socket wrench.

    • 4). Remove the transmission dipstick and insert a transmission funnel into the dipstick tube. Refill the transmission with four quarts of Hyundai SP3 fluid. Remove the funnel and install the dipstick.

    • 5). Start the engine. With your foot on the brake pedal, shift the transmission slowly through all the gears. Place the transmission in park, and check the fluid level. Add fluid to the Hyundai, one pint at a time, until the fluid level is in the crosshatched area on the dipstick. Test drive the Santa Fe around the block and recheck the fluid level.
