How to Build a Window Bench Chair
- 1). Lay a sheet of 15-by-40-inch 3/4-inch-thick plywood flat on a work surface. Stand four pieces of 15-by-17-inch plywood evenly spaced along the flat piece of plywood. Two of the upright pieces should be flush with the ends of the flat plywood, and two evenly spaced between them, to create four 12-inch cubbyholes.
- 2). Glue the upright planks in position, using a carpenter's square to ensure right angles. Apply glue to the exposed ends of the upright planks and place a second piece of 15-by-40-inch plywood on top to sandwich the upright planks.
- 3). Secure the box together with three 1 1/2-inch screws driven through the flat plywood pieces into the abutting ends of the upright planks.
- 4). Lay a piece of 16 1/2 by 42 inch 3/4-inch-thick plywood flat on the work surface. This will be the base of the window bench. Place the box on top of the base, with the back edge of the box flush with the back of the base and with a 1 1/2-inch overlap at the front and a 1-inch overlap on both sides.
- 5). Secure the box to the base with a 1 1/2-inch screw through each corner of the box cubbies into the base.
- 6). Place a second piece of 16 1/2 by 42 inch plywood on top of the box, positioned the same as the base, for the bench top. Secure the bench top to the box with screws through the corners of the box cubbies into the underside of the bench top.
- 7). Paint the bench as desired and let dry. Position the bench in place under the window and finish with a 15-by-40-inch box cushion.
