Their influence on global audience is insurmountable, for even if they languish from the tube, they are surely going to stay in our minds, no matter how many decades dawn. Following is my own list of reality TV shows, randomly mentioned. How shall they be ranked? You choose.
Survivor
Men fight men, men fight wild. Outwit. Outplay. Outlast. Quintessential survival-of-the-fittest game show, this one involves contestants being isolated in the wilderness, compete not only mentally but physically too, in order to win rewards and immunity from elimination. Loads of cash prices, and damn good challenges! The winner is, eventually, acclaimed as the 'Sole Survivor' of the show. A cascade of twenty-two seasons, this show ought to be one of the top 10 reality shows of the decade, what say?
American Idol
10 seasons… let me correct, 10 super-successful seasons, make it a must-watch. You know what's the biggest reason for watching this show? Every time you see a singer singing their heart out, you feel you could do better! American Idol gave away some of the most talented singers we have today, namely, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Kris Allen, Taylor Hicks, David Cook, etc. Think you can sing better than them? Break away to the next auditions!
Big Brother
A large house. A few celebrities. Continuously watched by television cameras. No phones. No friends. Weirdest of daily tasks. Lots of money. I think, Big Brother is 'Survivor' in disguise for those who enjoy less filth in life. However, to audience's surprise, there's much more filth happening inside. Yeah, it may be scripted. But who's to judge? Unless it's entertaining, you will see it. America awaits Season 13 of this monster of a reality show, and if, in any case, you happen to think you could stay in that madhouse, think again, for the Big Brother is watching you!
The Bachelor
So, you think you're a femme fatale who has this innate 'talent' of wooing all guys around, innit? Have you ever tried watching The Bachelor? Dude, winning heart of the opposite sex has always had its share of dire straits. That's what you broadcast on TV, on a larger scale, this time, a tad bit difficult. Why? Because you aren't the only one to fight for the 'fish'! In this 15-seasons old reality treatise, 25 women, wait a minute, 25 drop-dead-gorgeous women trash their past lives to stay in a house, and compete for the attention, and later on love, if there exists a bit, of a handsome - gasp - hunk. Tell me now, wanna try your tactics over this one?
America's Next Top Model
Women viewers loved the enviable makeovers, and men loved women having enviable makeovers… if you know what I mean! America's Next Top Model, or ANTM as they call it, has topped the US charts with beautiful women aspiring to become America's next top model every new season. 16 cycles hit the floor, while they're casting for the seventeenth. Think of it, why would you want to miss world's leading fashion editors, photographers, agency reps, and supermodels themselves judging the girls, sending those non-deserving back home, and providing that big leap to the one contestant who makes your heart melt with her beauty, and steals the show with a desirable attitude?
The Biggest Loser
Would you lose if you were paid big bucks? Some will, and some won't. However, this show, the Biggest Loser, involves losing of your weight in order to win, I'm sure all you plus-size folks out there wouldn't want to miss a chance, or would you? The Biggest Loser has chronicled the pursuit of plus size contestants to drop pounds, and end up winning more than two million dollars, now that is one hell of a reality show where you see nothing else but Reality! Professional trainers, nutritionists, and world dietitians have helped the overweight lose as much as 140 pounds during the show. Now, does that instigate to lose in order to win?
The Amazing Race
Adrenaline junkies love this race that involve many groups of two people teamed up to race around the world winning competitions. Hey, if you think it's just a car race… hello! Name a vehicle, and they have it for you to race in. Planes, helicopters, trucks, taxis, trains, buses, balloons (?), boats, bicycles, and if that's not it, be ready to race barefooted! The Amazing Race represents an unfinished business which is to be completed at the earliest. And the number of successful seasons? 18 races, and still running successfully!
Fear Factor
There do exist people who savor racing against the cheetah, talking to the wildest monkeys, jumping down from 30,000 feet, and eating the weirdest of insects, and this show, Fear Factor, is for them. It took it just 6 seasons to become people's favorite. Contestants from all over the world compete by doing mind-boggling stunts in the nick of time, and as the saying goes, the early bird gets the cheese, the contestant who finishes the earliest, or in most cases, who finishes, wins. Thus and so. No matter how much you dread crawling lizards on your body or rolling snakes with your hands… every fear in this show is a big factor, responsible for your victory.
So You Think You Can Dance
So, you think you can dance? And dance well? And dance like them? Highly unlikely, for this show, because of its tremendous talent, emerged as one of the top 10 reality TV shows of the decade. It was just 7 seasons ago that a show was broadcast, representing phenomenal dancing talent, virtuosos in all genres of dancing, and cutting-edge choreographers doing their best work. Today, this show is soon going to begin shooting its 8th season from October. To see some mind-boggling dance steps, and out-of-the-world performances, this is the best TV show ever, really.
The Hills
There are shows for entertainment, and then, there are shows only to redefine reality TV. The Hills, in its journey of 6 seasons, followed the personal lives of several youngsters, and eventually, was ranked at the 82nd position amongst the 100 Best Shows of the Last 25 Years by Entertainment Weekly. The Hills depicted the personal life of the former Laguna Beach beauty Lauren Conrad and the new lives of her friends in LA. This show has differentiated itself from the gamut of reality shows airing on the tube, thanks to its beautiful cinematography, and those heart-melting shots of Los Angeles. What was even more beautiful was the slim body of Conrad and her beautiful friends. This show is a must-watch if you have just graduated high school, and are having a tough time finding yourself!
