Etiquette for Party Invitation Time

    Considerations

    • Choose from two types of wording for party invitation time. Casual celebrations like a birthday party or St. Patrick's Day party call for casual invitation wording. More formal events, like a wedding reception or corporate holiday party, use fancier wording for the invitation time.

    Types

    • Invitations for formal events like weddings should spell out the invitation time--for example, it should say "Six o'clock in the Evening." Casual invitations for cookouts or birthday parties can use numerals for the party time--for example, "2:30 p.m."

    Considerations

    • If you choose to spell out the invitation time for your party and the party does not start at the top of the hour, traditional etiquette calls for you to use "half after" on the invitation--for example, "Half After Three in the Afternoon." However, the knot website states that you can use "Three-Thirty in the Afternoon" if the half after wording is too formal for your tastes.
