The Status and Dryness Level on My Whirlpool Dryer are Not Working

    Cycle Status Indicators

    • The display panel on many Whirlpool dryer models tracks the progress of the chosen dry cycle, including whether the cycle is in progress, the drum is cooling down, the cycle is done or other features, such as the wrinkle shield or steam option. If the control lock has been activated, this will also be shown on the status indicator panel.

    Dryness Level

    • Sensors inside the dryer monitor the moisture level of the clothes as they dry, and this is tracked on the display panel. “Wet” means that the load is still wet and the cycle is in the first stages of operation. When the indicator moves to “Damp,” the items are partially dried, and any items that should be removed before completely dry, such as delicate pieces, should be taken out at this time. Push “Pause/Cancel,” open the door and remove the desired items, then close the door and press “Start/Resume” to let the cycle finish. The dryness indicator will change to “Cool Down” or “Done” when the remaining items have finished drying.

    Sensor Problems

    • If the dryness indicator is not working, the sensors may need to be cleaned. Residue can build up on the sensors due to the use of fabric softener sheets, reducing the sensors' effectiveness. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth and gently wipe the sensors to remove any residue or debris, then dry the sensors with a clean, dry cloth.

    Status Indicator Problems

    • Items in the dryer may not make contact with the sensors properly if the dryer is not level, which prevents proper functioning of the status indicator display because the dryer cannot determine the moisture in the dryer if items are not tumbling correctly. Set a level on top of the dryer and adjust the leveling feet on the dryer until the bubble in the level is centered. If the dryer is installed on a pedestal, set the level on top of the dryer and open the pedestal drawer. Adjust the bolts inside the pedestal until the dryer is level. If the status indicator or dryness level still does not work properly after cleaning the sensors and leveling the dryer, contact Whirlpool for service.
