How to Keep Chatbots From Being PM Flooded

    • 1). Do not sign up for online surveys or questionnaires. Many people use their email addresses to sign into instant messaging clients. If you sign up for an online survey, chatbots can get your instant messaging name from these surveys.

    • 2). Keep your email address hidden when placing ads on websites such as Craigslist. Chatbots frequently “scrape” websites like this for email addresses. If you post your email on these kinds of sites, you could be vulnerable to chatbot flooding.

    • 3). Block the chatbot when it tries to IM you. Yahoo Messenger, AIM and Windows Live Messenger always prompt the users to block the screenname if the message is not coming from a recognized “friend.” Click the “Block” button to block the chatbot.

    • 4). Change your screenname if the chatbots are flooding your instant messaging client. Although this is a drastic step, you can easily export your buddy list and then send a message to your friends saying that you have changed your screenname.
