Definition:
Primary hyperlipidemia refers to elevated lipid levels -- which include cholesterol and triglycerides -- that are due to genetic disorders and are inherited. This includes inherited conditions such as familial hypercholesterolemia and familial hypertriglyceridemia.
If left untreated, persistently high lipid levels could place one at risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
