Travel Tips for Hailsham, England

    Castles and Heritage

    • One must-see building in Hailsham is Herstmonceux Castle. The castle is not just a castle museum like most castles in England, but rather a bed and breakfast. The castle is generally used as part of Queen's University, but it is a unique housing option for those staying in East Sussex. If you would just like to visit the fifteenth century castle, it is surrounded by beautiful Elizabeth gardens and parkland and you can enjoy the visitors center inside the castle as well. Another popular attraction for its incredible landscape and gardens is Michelham Priory. Tucked away in the countryside, visitors can enjoy art exhibitions, wildlife, history exhibits and a working watermill.

    Trug Baskets, Farming and Ropes

    • Hailsham first put its name on the map for rope production. The small village is where all the "hanging rope" in the country came from. Since the decline of hanging as punishment, it has more recently been noted for its impeccable farming and truggery.

Many farms are open for visits in Hailsham, including Merryweathers Farm. Merryweathers not only lets you and your family explore different aspects and history of farming, but offers classes to learn how to garden and farm. Another interesting business ran from home is Hailsham's Truggery. The Truggery is a workshop attached to someone's home that has made trug baskets for more than 100 years. Taking home one of these baskets is like taking home a piece of British history.

    Hailsham and Families

    • Hailsham has two main attractions that are perfect for families visiting the small town. The Observatory Science Center exists in the old Royal Observatory building after it moved to Greenwich (London) in the 1950s. The building still focuses on astronomy and includes copper clad domes and historic telescopes. The center offers many hands-on science exhibits that are not only fun, but educational as well.

Knockhatch Adventure Park is also a popular family attraction in Hailsham. The park has a petting zoo, indoor playground, outdoor playground, climbing wall, tractor rides, bungee trampoline, miniature railway and more. Children will enjoy running around the park, burning off energy, while you enjoy tasty food and the gift shop.
