Peabody Hotel Facts

    Origin

    • The Peabody Memphis was built in 1869 by Robert Brinkley, who wanted to establish the "finest hotel" in the South, according to the hotel's website. It was named after Brinkley's late friend, George Peabody.

    Location

    • Located two blocks from popular Beale Street, the 468-room Peabody Memphis is a Mobil Four-Star, AAA Four-Diamond facility.

    The Ducks

    • The tradition of walking the ducks through the lobby started in 1933, when the hotel's general manager and a friend returned from a hunting trip in Arkansas. According to the hotel website, they thought it would be amusing to put live hunting decoys in the hotel's lobby fountain.

    The Ducks Today

    • After more than 75 years and two animal trainers, the ducks continue to march twice daily, at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., through the Peabody's lobby to the fountain.

    Locations

    • There are now Peabody locations in Orlando, Florida, and Little Rock, Arkansas. Both have a daily duck parade at 11 a.m.
