How to Properly Buff a Second Coat of Urethane on Hardwood Floors
- 1). Lightly buff the first coat of dried urethane with a hand-held vibrating sander and 180-grit sandpaper. Start at one end of the room and work to the other, sanding with the direction of the boards. Don't press hard on the sander, as the goal is just to dull the shine, not to sand off the gloss.
- 2). Vacuum up the dust. Wipe down the whole floor with tack cloths to pick up any residual dust.
- 3). Pour a puddle of urethane onto the floor in the corner furthest from the doorway, so you can work your way out of the room. The puddle should be about the width of your floor gloss applicator head.
- 4). Set a lambswool floor gloss applicator into the puddle of urethane and drag it slowly backward, over the floor, going in the direction of the boards. Add more urethane as needed. Work your way across the room and out the door, keeping the layer thin and smooth.
- 5). Let the urethane set for six to 10 hours. Repeat Steps 1-4 to lay a third coat of urethane. Let it set for 24 hours before using the floor.
