Increased Rate of Violent Crime in Orlando
- In 2008, Orlando had a population of 229,808. Nearly 4,000 violent crimes were been reported to the Orlando Police Department that year. The incidence of violent crimes had risen by nearly 1,800 since 2006.
- The murder rate in 2005 was a reported 22 cases. In 2008, the rate had nearly doubled to 43 open murder cases. During 2006, 82 Orlando citizens reported a rape to local authorities. In 2008, 131 violent sexual assault cases were under investigation.
- Robbery and assault cases were also on the rise in the city. Robberies or home invasions more than doubled from 2006 to 2008, reaching a total of 1,320 cases. Assault cases also increased from 1,293 in 2006 to a total of 2,335 in 2008. Figures for the calendar year, 2010 will be released after January 2011.
