Introduction to Clicker Training on Horses

    Features

    • Clicker training consists of using a small plastic device that makes a click when pressed, as the name indicates. It is used for all types of training, from dogs to dolphins, and falls under the blanket of "positive reinforcement training." Rather than using corrections for not completing a task, clicker training involves clicking the device after an animal has performed the task, then providing a reward. Thus, the sound of the clicker predicts a reward. Training of this type often involves waiting for the animal to volunteer the action for which the trainer is waiting, then clicking, or luring, the animal into the desired position using food, toys or other rewards.

    Clicker Charging

    • The first step in getting your horse accustomed to the clicker is a step called clicker charging. Because your horse doesn't instinctively know that the click means he has correctly performed a behavior, he must be taught the significance of the clicker. To charge your clicker, click and give your horse something he really likes, such as a treat or a good rubdown. Repeat this until he excitedly comes to you when he hears the clicker.

    Target Training

    • Many horse trainers suggest skipping clicker charging with your horse and moving right into target training, which means teaching your horse to touch a target of your choosing. This can be anything--a brush, a whip, a lid off a food container, a bucket etc. Target training is incredibly simple. Hold out the object. If your horse nudges it, she gets a click followed by a treat. Repeat until your horse will follow the object anywhere to touch it.

    Additional Training

    • Clicker training can be used for almost any type of training, including behaviors that would usually require physically moving your horse. For example, if your horse doesn't want to move in a particular direction for boarding or grooming, you can move the target or you can apply slight pressure to the horse. When he moves to relieve the pressure, click and reward. Continue until your horse is happy to move with light pressure.

    Reducing Fear

    • Clicker training can also help nervous horses learn to tolerate objects or actions of which they are afraid. If you would like to put a halter on your horse, hold it out. If your horse moves toward you, click and reward. Continue clicking for any behavior toward the halter, in the halter, etc., until you can clip the halter around her head. This can be applied to almost anything if you take your time and move at a pace that is comfortable for your horse.
