How to Check on a Social Security Claim

    • 1). Go to the SSA website and click the link at the left of the screen titled, "Check the status of your application." When the application status screen appears, log in using your Social Security number and confirmation number, which you should have received when you first filed your OMB form No. 0960-0763. It takes a minute or two for the site to compile the information on your claim, but it will ultimately give you its status.

    • 2). Contact the SSA directly using the "Contact us" button at the left of the home screen. The next screen will provide information on how to contact the SSA by phone or mail, as well as a link to frequently asked questions. You can check on your claim using one of these methods if you didn't like or understand the answer you received when you checked your status online.

    • 3). Use the link at the left of the screen titled, "Find a Social Security office" if you'd like to check your application in person. When the screen appears, type in your ZIP code and the site will give you the address of the nearest SSA office with a map and directions.
