Neutral Living Room Colors

    The Beige Tones

    • Beige colors are commonly considered neutral tones and can range from tan to taupe. Depending on the amount of pigment and underlying tones, these colors can either be a cool or warm color. Beige with a yellow undertone tends to be on the warm side and creates an inviting atmosphere. Taupe with a blue undertone on the other hand, will tend to have a cooling effect on a room. Be cognizant of underlying tones in neutral colors such as beige, tan, taupe and khaki, as these subtle, underlying tones can influence the way a room looks and feels. A way to do this is to hold a paint chip or piece of fabric out in direct sunlight. This will give an indication of the true color.

    Green

    • Green might not seem to be a neutral color, but under certain conditions, it functions quite well. With blue undertones, green provides a cooling feel to a living room, while green with yellow undertones gives a warm cast. Softer and lighter shades of green are generally recommended for a living room with a tendency toward greens that have been softened with gray, brown or yellow. These colors help to pick up the colors of nature; which work well with most furnishings and provide a neutral backdrop for any design.

    Black, White and Grey

    • Black, white and grey work well as neutrals in a living room, giving a sense of sophistication and functionality. While these colors may seem stark and even uninviting, they offer a multitude of possibilities when it comes to decorating.

Black is probably not suitable for use a wall color for most people, but can be used in furniture, artwork, soft furnishings and even flooring as an effective neutral. When paired with red, orange, yellow or other vibrant colors, black is striking and thoroughly modern. Black can also take on a more romantic flair when paired with pinks, a retro look with turquoise and sophistication when paired with cream and brown.

White is the universal neutral color. White is the go to color that covers many model homes and gives a crisp, clean look. Any other color pairs well with white. When white is used as an accent colors, it pops out visually and creates energy. Think of paring white with royal blues, burgundy, or chocolate browns.

Grey is a calming neutral, suitable for use in contemporary homes, as well as vintage homes. When painted on walls, grey evokes a feeling of relaxation and calm. Grey furniture is a soothing backdrop for placement of vivid accessories like orange pillows and colorful shag rugs.
