How to Open & Close Credit Cards

    Opening Credit Cards

    • 1). Get a credit card application. You can find credit card applications in the mail or online. If you search for a credit card application online, you can search for cards that offer airline points or find something with a low introductory rate. If you have a low credit score, you may have to settle for a card with a high rate and low credit limit.

    • 2). Fill out your personal and financial information on the credit card application. The credit card company will use this information to pull your credit report and decide if you qualify for a card.

    • 3). Check the mailbox or your email to find out if you were approved for a credit card. When you receive your card in the mail, call the number on the front of the card and activate it. After activating the card, it will be ready for use.

    Closing Credit Cards

    • 1). Call the customer service number listed on the back of your credit card and request to speak to a representative.

    • 2). Tell the credit card representative that you want to close out your credit card. The person you speak with may try to get you to keep your card open, so be persistent.

    • 3). Check your mail; you should receive a letter from your credit card company confirming that your account was closed within a month. If you don't receive such a confirmation letter, call them and make sure they closed the account.

    • 4). Obtain a copy of your credit report to confirm that your credit card account was closed. You can get a free copy at AnnualCreditReport.com.
