Increased Funding for the CFTC in 2008

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) received their funding for 2008 with the signing of the spending bill by President Bush on December 26, 2007.

The CFTC regulates the commodity futures and option markets in the United States. They will receive $112 in funding from the government, which is a $14 million increase over 2007. By comparison, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) received $906 million in funding for 2008.

There has been a widely discussed debate in the last couple of years on whether the CFTC and the SEC should be combined. There are some over-lapping jurisdictions and disputes between the two agencies, so it might make sense to combine them. However, they are both so wrapped up in red tape that it might not work at this point.
