Wind Chime Directions

    • 1). Cut six pieces of pipe in varying lengths with a pipe cutter. A shorter pipe causes the pitch to be higher. Although high-grade aluminum and copper create a more musical sound, any of pipe may be used.

    • 2). Ping the pipes with a metal clapper to ensure the quality of the sound. Make any needed adjustments by cutting additional lengths from the pipes. File the ends of the pipes to soften the tone and raise the pitch.

    • 3). Drill a small hole 1/2 inch down from the top of each pipe.

    • 4). String the pipes with heavy-grade fishing line. Feed one end of the string through the previously made holes in each pipe, and tie a knot. Pipes may have their own individual strings, or all the pipes may be attached with one long string. If you're using one long string, weave it into the top of one pipe down the other hole to the next piece of pipe. Pull the lines from all the pipes together until they are even.

    • 5). Drill a small hole in the middle of a small piece of metal for the clapper. Cut the fishing line for the clapper, and thread it through the hole. Leave enough line to attach the clapper to the washer. Place the clapper in the center of the chimes so it will hit the pipes when they catch a breeze.

    • 6). Loop all the strings through a large washer, and tie a knot.

    • 7). Hang the wind chimes in the desired location.
