How to Fix a GE Ice Maker

    • 1). Switch on the ice maker using the power switch on the side of the mechanism or pulling down the sensor wire. You can easily knock the power switch to the "Off" position while you're loading food. Pull off any ice cubes restricting the movement of the sensor wire -- the ice maker won't work unless it can move up and down.

    • 2). Change how you use the refrigerator -- don't try and freeze hot or warm food containers without allowing them to reach room temperature first or you risk melting the ice cubes. Move bulky objects out of the freezer door shelf and away from the door frame so you can close the door without allowing in warm air.

    • 3). Dislodge any stuck ice cubes in the mechanism or dispenser chute with a chopstick. Ice cubes can stick together and block the dispenser or freeze to the plastic auger that rotates the cubes. Discard the entire bucket of cubes if they have frozen into a single, solid mass. Use hot water to melt the remains out of the bucket.

    • 4). Examine the water supply to your refrigerator -- make sure the shut-off lever in the water pipe is in the "Open" position and the tubing is straight. A blockage in the water pipe will stop or reduce ice production inside the freezer. You might have to move the refrigerator away from the wall to access the water pipes.

    • 5). Change the water filter, if fitted -- it may have become clogged with debris from the water supply. General Electric refrigerators are able to run without a filter, but you should consider installing a replacement to improve the taste and appearance of your ice cubes. The filter is usually located in the upper right corner of the refrigerator compartment.
