Health & Medical Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids and Obesity - Related?

Hemorrhoids are dilated, twisted blood vessels in the rectum or anus.
Obesity is generally defined as weight 30% or more over "normal" range.
Both are bad...
together, they are misery! Obesity and pregnancy are predisposing factors toward the development of hemorrhoids for the same reason.
In both cases there is an increase in lower abdominal pressure.
So what? Well, the "so what" is that delicate blood vessels in the anus or rectum can be traumatized in ways from which they may not recover.
(There is a greater likelihood that hemorrhoids will improve or disappear after delivery because the added weight is usually temporary.
Unfortunately, this is often not the case with obesity.
) In addition to an increase in pelvic pressure brought on by obesity, are the additional considerations of low exercise and sedentary position.
If you are overweight, you are less likely to participate in a regular exercise and fitness program.
Likewise, if you're carrying extra weight, the temptation to "just sit" is great.
Sometimes it just takes too much effort to get up and move around.
This is understandable...
but it is also lethal to your hemorrhoids! We all know what is bad about obesity...
increased heart and lung disease, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), stress on vital organs such as the liver and kidneys, high cholesterol and triglycerides...
and on and on it goes.
Well then...
what's so bad about hemorrhoids? Let's begin with pain, bleeding, itching, burning, mucus, constipation, prolapse, thrombosis, anemia, infection...
and on and on it also goes! Hemorrhoids and obesity are both to be avoided at any cost.
There is nothing good to come from either of them.
What to do? It's a tough course but...
you must lose weight.
Sorry, but the only treatment for obesity is weight loss.
Oftentimes, however, folks get just plain discouraged because it seems next to impossible to lose 80 pounds (or more).
And, it is "impossible".
However, it is not "impossible" to lose 5 pounds.
Make your goals realistic.
I once decided to embark on a running program.
So, I started with the purchase of a new running outfit and new shoes (of course).
I arose the first morning of my running plan, dressed myself all up in my new duds, "exploded" out the door...
and reached my neighbor's driveway before I thought I was going to need 911 to get me back home! That was the end of my running program! The point is, we tend to set our goals too high in the beginning.
If you have 100 pounds to lose...
decide to lose 5 pounds.
Just like with a hundred mile journey, you get there only one step at a time.
If you lose 5 pounds...
mega-congratulations to you, you winner! Then, you proceed to the next 5 pounds and keep going from there.
Yes, it will take a bit of time, but the time is going to pass whether you are losing weight or not.
Further, the danger of not losing weight, paradoxically, is gaining weight.
This is because if you do not have a plan and are doing nothing toward weight loss, you are going to continue business as usual, which means you are going to continue to gain weight.
That is a fact! So, start small, and I promise those small steps will eventually add up to one huge step.
At some point, you will notice a difference and how good it will feel.
Plus, I promise, you do not want those ugly hemorrhoids! Just do it, my friend.
You can, and it's worth it!
