How to Limit Broadband Connection Speed

    Traffic Shaper XP

    • 1). Download Traffic Shaper XP, at bandwidthcontroller.com, on the computer you want limited. Double-click the setup file---TrafficShaperXpSetup.exe---when the download is complete. Click "Next" through the prompts to install the software.

    • 2). Click "Finish" when the installation process is complete. Traffic Shaper XP opens, and a window titled "Welcome to the Network Configuration Wizard" appears. Click "Next."

    • 3). Use the drop-down menus next to "Download Capacity" and "Upload Capacity" to determine the speed of the Internet connection (in kilobits per second). The drop-down menus have several predefined values for you to select from, or you can type a speed manually. Click "Next."

    • 4). Click the network connection that you want to limit the speed for. In most cases, you should choose "Local Area Connection." Click "Next."

    • 5). Click "Finish" to save your settings.

    NetLimiter 2 Lite

    • 1). Browse to the NetLimiter, at netlimiter.com, on the computer you want limited. Click the "Download" link under "NetLimiter 2 Lite." Note: Unlike the other two utilities mentioned in this article---which are free---NetLimiter 2 Lite is shareware. After the initial 28-day trial period, you will need to purchase the software to continue using it.

    • 2). Double-click the installation file---nl_2011_lite.exe. Click "Next" through the prompts to install the software, then restart your computer when prompted. When the computer restarts, the blue and white NetLimiter icon appears in the system tray.

    • 3). Right-click the NetLimiter icon, and then click "Open." Click "Continue" if NetLimiter 2 Lite is still in the initial evaluation period.

    • 4). Click the drop-down menu next to "Units", and enter the type of unit that you would like to use to define the speed of the connection. For example, if you want to limit the connection to 1 megabit per second, select "Mbits."

    • 5). Click the number under "Download Speed" to make a blinking cursor appear. Use the backspace key to erase the number displayed, then type a number to indicate the amount that you would like to limit the download speed to.

    • 6). Place a check in the "Limit" box under "Incoming" next to the name of the computer under "Connection" to begin limiting the download speed.
