The Emtrafesa Bus Company in Northern Peru
- Full Name: Empresa de Transportes Ave Fénix S.A.C.
- Coverage: primarily Lima and the north coast of Peru, but also inland to Cajamarca and Jaén
- Website: www.emtrafesa.com
Emtrafesa certainly doesn’t rank up there with major Peruvian bus companies like Cruz del Sur, Ormeño and Movil Tours, but it is nonetheless a handy company for trips along the coast north of Lima, particularly the short hop between Chiclayo and Trujillo.
With a fleet comprising more than 80 Mercedes, Volvo and Scania buses, Emtrafesa offers regular departures along the north coast and some inland trips to places like Cajamarca and Jaén. The buses aren't as comfortable or modern as those owned by their larger national rivals, but are perfectly adequate for four to five hour stints along the Peruvian stretch of the Pan-American Highway.
The company itself was formed in Trujillo back in the mid-1970s, with the Trujillo to Chiclayo trip being the company’s bread-and-butter route. Emtrafesa’s large Trujillo terminal remains an important and central hub, with the Lima terminal in La Victoria being the most southerly destination. You can find a list of all the terminals/offices at the Emtrafesa website.
Bottom Line:
While not as luxurious or secure as some of the larger bus companies in Peru, Emtrafesa is certainly a viable option for travelers making shorter hops along the north coast. Having traveled with them a handful of times, I’d definitely use them again in the future.
