The Rise And Rise Of Paulo Coelho
Born in the year 1947, it was at the early age of 17 years when Paulo Coelho declared his intention to become a writer. His parents were dead against his wishes, mainly because Brazil was then being ruled by a military junta and the intellectuals and writers were being persecuted at that time.
A Difficult Period
He was sent to a mental hospital due to his rebellious behavior, and he escaped from there and was sent back three times. He also received shock treatment there. In 1960s Coelho was into drugs and rock and roll world. Paulo Coelho became a playwright when he was in his twenties. The other roles he performed at that time included were that of a song writer with some pop music groups, a journalist, and a theatre director.
His Life Collapsed In 1974
Paulo Coelho says his life collapsed in the year 1974, when he was arrested three times. The first time he was arrested because he was a bystander when a bank robbery was taking place. The second time he was arrested because at a rock concert he spoke out against the establishment. Once he was released by the police, he was arrested the third time by paramilitary forces and he was also tortured in their custody for about a week. In the later part of the decade 1970s, he got a job as artistic director for CBS though he was sacked from there in 1979. He kept trying for the music industry jobs for the next two years , though without success.
Getting In Touch With Ram
He came to Europe to get his life on track again and came in touch with a Catholic sect which studied the language of symbols. The sect was known as RAM or Regnus Agnus Mundi and Paulo Coelho progressed within the sect pretty quickly and went on to become a Magus.
The Journey and His First Book
Soon after he went on a pilgrimage to Santiago di Compostella in Spain, on the instructions of his mentor in the sect, he wrote the book The Pilgrimage which described his experiences as he made his journey towards Santiago. Next came his book The Alchemist in 1988 which made him a celebrity the world over. The story of The Alchemist was about following your destiny and how one could be open to the signs provided by the universe. The book became a bestseller right away and has sold about 11 million copies throughout the world.
Second Bestselling Author of the World
According to the French Magazine Lire, Paulo Coelho was the second bestselling author throughout the world. He has won more than 15 awards for his literary works, and his work has been acclaimed even by the critics due to his language that touches hearts, rather than addressing minds.
