How to Interpret High Blood Pressure Rates

    • 1). Obtain a blood pressure reading.

    • 2). The higher number is the systolic pressure. It represents the pressure exerted when your heart is beating. This number is always stated first. The lower number is the diastolic pressure. This represents the pressure exerted when your heart is at rest between heart beats.

    • 3). If your systolic pressure is 140 or higher and/or your diastolic pressure is 90 or higher, this may mean that you have high blood pressure or hypertension.

    • 4). Consult with your physician regarding your blood pressure reading and results. Your doctor will be able to provide you with accurate results and readings based on individual factors. He will be able to determine the most effective treatment for you to maintain your blood pressure at normal levels.
