Human Rights Training for Police

    Facets of Training

    • Most governments that provide human rights training for their police officers subscribe the the United Nations standards for human rights. This international standard governs how an officer would approach and question an individual, the process for taking a suspect into custody and the manner in which that suspect (or even convict) would be housed and fed and allowed access to media and religious practices.

    Proper Use of Force

    • An additional important aspect of the training governs use of force. An officer has quite a lot of power in our community and proper force training is important to educate the officer on the consequences of using force and on when and how to use force judiciously to prevent the officer from abusing his unique role.

    Sensitivity to Vulnerable Populations

    • Another aspect of the training involves educating the officer on challenges facing vulnerable populations. These groups each face unique problems that may slip past the average citizen -- and if the officer has not had contact with such a group before, he may not be aware of the issue. Such groups include the homeless, elderly, women, victims of violent crime, even political minority groups.
