How to Lead Premarital Counseling

    • 1). Hand out the agenda. Having a program schedule allows participants not only to see details about what is ahead, but also informs them of how long each segment will last. Be sure to include breaks of 10 to 15 minutes if you decide to lead a session that is more than two hours long. A one-day session that is four to eight hours long is a good standard to follow.

    • 2). Ask for introductions. One way to break the ice and get couples comfortable with each other is to have them stand up and introduce themselves. Some people are shy and will just want to give their names. Have them include personal information in their introductions, such as how long they have been together, where they met, and if they have children or plan on having children once married.

    • 3). Play games. People typically retain information better when it is presented in a fun way. Engaging the couples with games is an enjoyable way to help them learn the keys to having a successful, happy marriage. The Discovery Game website (http://thediscoverygame.com/) offers a game specifically designed for couples.

    • 4). Introduce speakers. This step is optional, but you may want to schedule a speaker if you decide to have a session that lasts up to eight hours. Since unmarried couples are the primary audience, it would be wise to ask a married couple to speak and provide insight to the group. Also, ask your guests to leave time to take a few questions.

    • 5). Give out prizes. Prizes keep the premarital counseling session exciting for everyone. Prizes may include gift certificates to a local restaurant or a gift basket filled with massage oil, wine and bubble bath. If you are on a budget you can make a coupon book with certificates "good for one 30-minute massage" or "dinner at your favorite restaurant" that partners can give to each other.

    • 6). Get feedback. Hand out surveys toward the end of the session. Be sure to ask what people liked and disliked about the program. This feedback is especially helpful if you plan on facilitating more sessions for engaged or dating couples.
